Is it really a whole year since it felt like much of the world was asking the same question on repeat ‘Is it a Prince or Princess?’ When the news came through that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had had a safe delivery of a baby boy the questioning turned to names and physical characteristics. We were temporarily sated with the announcement of the little Prince’s name- George Alexander Louis, then as his first precious year has progressed questions and speculation has frenetically concerned itself with each developmental stage, how Kate and William are emerging as parents, who is the Nanny, how both sets of Grandparents are influencing Prince George’s life and so on.
Phew!!! Let’s take a breath, pause and just enjoy today for todays’ sake – Prince George of Cambridge’s First Birthday.
As every parent will tell you, their child’s first birthday is a very significant day; memories flood back of this time a year ago, how that felt and what happened but just as significantly, how much life and they themselves have changed in that relatively short space of time. Whilst the first year of life is the steepest learning curve for a new brain, the same can also be said for the first year of becoming a parent, the learning is vast.
Very few parents view themselves as accomplished in the art of parenting and they don’t have the eyes of the world on them capturing every tiny detail and then subjecting it to intense analysis and comment. So just as today will focus on Prince George and his significant milestone of a first birthday- not to mention the tremendous skill of walking that he’s clearly mastered, let’s also acknowledge the milestone for his parents and wish them a day full of many happy memories, both reflecting back and looking forward for what’s to come.
The traditional birthday greeting of ‘Many Happy Returns’ indicates an intention that there will be many birthdays to come, and we share those greetings today and look forward to enjoying many more significant royal birthdays in the future.
